Review
The Merck Index is your sole go to reference source for arriving to the heart of the chemistry rapidly. Researchers typically let their imaginations wander in the dark cave of molecular research frontiers and the Merck Index is their safe flashlight of known reactivities and quantities.
“Scientists working in many different areas…will be looking forwards to the future editions with their continued tradition of excellence.” (American Journal of Therapeutics, September/October 2007)
“…a must for academic, public, and special libraries…essential.” (CHOICE, June 2007)
“…the quality of the contents in one concise volume makes TMI the premier work of its kind…should be available as part of the arms-reach searching armamentarium of laboratory scientists of many stripes…” (Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling, March 2007)
“The Merck Index was first published in 1899, and it will continue to serve as the standard reference for chemists, biochemists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, and other health professionals.” (Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, February 8, 2007)

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn’t find the Q’s. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware….count your pages when you get this book.
Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.
The Merk Index is an essential reference book for chemists. During my entire career working in the research and development of analytical chemistry methods for pharmaceuticals, there always was a copy of The Merk Index in the laboratory. Usually, I had my own copy of an earlier edition on my own bookshelf, over my desk. I cannot imagine starting a new method development project without, first, looking for any pertinent information that might be in The Merk Index.
As a chemical engineering researcher, the Merck Index has been with me my entire career. Anyone out there who is remotely involved with biopharmaceuticals, galvanized plating, trigonal planar Lithium hydride battery formulations, or just plain ole kitchen cabinet cleaners. The Merck Index is your sole go to reference source for arriving to the heart of the chemistry rapidly. Researchers typically let their imaginations wander in the dark cave of molecular research frontiers and the Merck Index is their safe flashlight of known reactivities and quantities.

First issue, titled Merck's Index
The Merck Index is an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs and biologicals with over 10,000 monograph on single substances or groups of related compounds[1] published online by the Royal Society of Chemistry.[2]
History[edit]
The first edition of the Merck's Index was published in 1889 by the German chemical company Emanuel Merck and was primarily used as a sales catalog for Merck's growing list of chemicals it sold.[2] The American subsidiary was established two years later and continued to publish it. During World War I the US government seized Merck's US operations and made it a separate American 'Merck' company that continued to publish the Merck Index.
In 2012 the Merck Index was licensed to the Royal Society of Chemistry.[3] An online version of The Merck Index, including historic records and new updates not in the print edition,[1] is commonly available through research libraries. It also includes an appendix with monographs on organic named reactions.
The current edition is the 15th, published in April 2013.
Monographs in The Merck Index typically contain:[1]
- a CAS registry number
- synonyms of the substance, such as trivial names and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry nomenclature
- a chemical formula
- a structural formula
- a description of the substance's appearance
- melting point and boiling point
- solubility in solvents commonly used in the laboratory
- citations to other literature regarding the compound's chemical synthesis
- a therapeutic category, if applicable
- caution and hazard information
